 1) Jean, eigentlich Ella Gwendolen Rees Williams [riːs 'wɪljəmz], englische Schriftstellerin karibischer Herkunft, * Roseau (Dominica) 24. 8. 1890, ✝ Exeter 14. 5. 1979; lebte ab 1907 in Europa, v. a. in Südengland und Paris. In ihren autobiographisch beeinflussten Romanen und Erzählungen schildert sie eindringlich die Identitätssuche sozialer Außenseiterinnen. Ihr als »Vorgeschichte« zu Charlotte Brontës Roman »Jane Eyre« (3 Bände, 1847) angelegtes Werk »Wide Sargasso Sea« (1966; deutsch »Sargassomeer«) stellt das Schicksal einer in der kolonialen Männerwelt Westindiens zum Opfer werdenden Frau dar und gilt heute als Klassiker der karibischen Literatur.

 2) Sir (seit 1907) John, walisischer Keltologe, * Cwmrheidol (Verwaltungsbezirk Carmarthenshire) 21. 6. 1840, ✝ Oxford 17. 12. 1915; wurde 1877 Professor in Oxford, erforschte als Erster die Stellung des Kymrischen im Rahmen der keltischen Sprachen mit der Methode der historischen Sprachvergleichung und trat mit zahlreichen Arbeiten zur keltischen Volks- und Altertumskunde sowie zur keltischen Philologie hervor.
